Chromatography - colour and water

Dipping the ends of strips of paper into a small amount of water and watching it be absorbed. 

We first made predictions about what might happen to the colours. Will they spread, stay the same, go lighter or darker in colour shade?

We drew in felt pens on the paper - sometimes 2 colours that we knew could potentially mix together.

The interesting colour was black! Can you see what happened to that?
It was made of more than 1 colour!

 

Our first house designs are ready to present. Our Learning Pathway is well on the way.

EXPLORING - After reading and researching in books about homes around the world and what features they have to keep them cool or warm, we had some more ideas about what to think about for our designs. Then we conducted a Maths survey for the electrical appliances in our home and worked out which rooms had the most electricity use. They were the Kitchen and the Living Room.





Next we are MAKING MEANING AND CONNECTIONS between our own ideas and the evidence around us. To do this we are conducting a survey about the energy we use at home and how we can keep our home warm and dry when we need it that way. We also came to the conclusion that we need to know how to keep it cool in Summer as this is part of home design too.

Rylee, Ethan and Drake took a lot of time to work out how to support their roof, they have added carpet to keep warm, come in and ask them to describe the rest of their features to you!

Part of the Design Brief was to include bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom. These are rooms that we all like to have. James has put a lot of effort into making his tiny furniture to fit inside his model. The scale is very impressive.

Beau has used his roof to have a terrace to sit out on in the Summer, he has an umbrella to keep cool under and is going to install a heat pump to keep both warm in summer and cool in winter He has not got too much glass or windows where heat can escape.

After our Monday scootering session we have learned to emergency stop, look out for pedestrians, brake effectively, turn left and right, use both feet - one at a time - to brake and how to fit helmets so they do not fall off when we fall over!

We have been revising our addition skills along with estimation. Adding onto the original number and then adding on again - using strategies we know and adding in our heads - imaging.

Tinker Time - using the Edisons

New to the Team 3 Tinker Time are a set of Edison Robots. Here is James and Natasha who along with Aayush and Tiffany have been learning with Mrs Lee once a week about new Tinker Time activities. They have been given these roles as they are really interested in technology and how it is used to learn new thinking and problem solving skills. They are now leading our class in learning to use these new programmable robots. Well done Texperts!

Dramaramas! Great drama unfolded at the Museum - a summary of our ideas so far! Thank you so much to the wonderful parents who came along and supported us!

Each of our groups (extra points if whanau participated and I'm happy to say they all have awesome acting skills) had to create a drama of a type of Good Sort we had discussed in our Education Session with the fantastic educator Leichelle.

Life boat rescuers had to be very strong and row across treacherous conditions from Christchurch Beaches. Here is Alexandra's Gran leading the team of Tiffany, Caprice, David, Stevie-Mei and Sammie.

Oh no! Alexandra's Mum has had her back pack stolen - ring the police! Here they come in their blue uniforms! Alexandra, Geena, Kaya, Tayla and Kiera.
