Exploring activities in the classroom...

Lots of children are often asking me to save something they have designed and made either by themselves or in a group of friends. A way of recording their own creations is to take a photo so here you are....

Thursday 22 February 2018

We are learning to log in to the Drive and open our files!

Lots of learning here with a great growth mind set!
This group of texperts are learning to identify keys on the keyboard such as 'shift' and '@'
Now they can open their Reading folder and start their slides.
This group of children will then teach another group the same skills alongside Mrs T.

Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐 Xīnnián kuàilè

If you would like to learn how to say Happy New Year here is a suggestion from

新年快乐 / 新年快樂 (Xīnnián kuàilè)

'New Year happiness!'
  • In Mandarin: /sshin-nyen kwhy-ler/
  • In Cantonese: /sen-nin feye-lor/
Today we got together with our friends from R22 and made Chinese Lanterns with dragons on them. We watched a narrative that described some of the traditions of Chinese New Year like lucky colours of red and gold; and what to eat - noodles very long ones bring good fortune so don't cut them up!
Here are some of the children from R14 and R22 who are celebrating the New Year. Geena and Kiera looked so proud, and pretty too.

Mighty Maths Rockets

Tiffany and Brandon challenge each other in this dice game where you roll 2 dice and select a number made from the 2 digits to write on to the rocket. The numbers can be placed anywhere from the top to the bottom of the rocket in the available 10 spaces but must be in order from smallest to biggest. The first person to fill all 10 slots and have their numbers in the correct order is the winner.

Yi Fan and Jessica accepted the challenge and worked out that the largest possible number would be 66 and the smallest possible number would be 11.

Milana, Stevie-Mei and Aayush are using their number knowledge of 2 digit numbers and thinking strategically to see if they can fill the spaces first.

Caprice, Aston and Rylee concentrated hard on their numbers. I wonder who filled their rocket in first AND had the numbers in the correct order? Lots of MATHS TALK here!

You can play this game at home with paper, and any number of dice. The more dice you have the larger the numbers available and the more digits you have to put in order.

What do we think of on a hot humid Auckland Day?

Cool drinks with fruit and ice cubes!

Sweet Watermelon - just what we feel like eating!

If you come into class you will read our WHO AM I? descriptions - see if you can guess who matches to their portrait?

Reading aloud and performing in front of the class.

Reading aloud with expression and intonation are going to be our goals for reading in the next couple of weeks. When we read like this our audience or listeners are interested and want to find out what is going to happen next. Reading Plays together is fun and entertaining. We gain self confidence which in turn improves our self esteem.

R14 will be part of the Koru Assembly next Friday - come along and watch! 2:15pm in the hall

Chapter Chat NZ on Twitter

If you are on Twitter you may like to follow us in the biggest book club for NZ Primary Classes! Just look for Sunnyhills R14 and you will see us starting Friday to discuss and contribute in a meaningful and purposeful way through Mrs Trembath's guidance. The purpose is to read our shared novel - Terrible Two - as a class - and learn from our reading and share our learning with other classes around NZ. It is a real audience and they are real children to communicate with. The class will learn that other children read the same books they do and live in places the same or different to Auckland.

Musiq Hub Tutors visit

It's always interesting to see and hear what is available in our school community after school and these private Musiq Hub tutors Shaun and Jordan have been running classes in our Music room for a few years now. They kindly came to demonstrate the Y3 - 6 all about their instruments. Please refer to an earlier newsletter on our School Website for more information if you missed the try outs the other morning and contact them for more information.

Woohoo! Our first Principal's Award goes to...drum roll please!

Ayyan!! It was soooo hard for Mrs T to choose. I look forward to having an expert cricket player to give me some tips!

PTA picnic night!

Our parents are awesome! This evening Mrs Trembath and some very helpful R14 children showed our Mums, Dads and Grandparents how to play the cups games. Now they can understand a little of what it's like to be in our shoes when we are getting used to being in a new class and making new friends. We all had a go and some laughs and you may find yourselves playing this at home if this weekend is an inside one! Thanks everyone for being such great sports!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Mrs Trembath and Mrs Smith
