Learning to write Metaphors

We are learning to write metaphors. We are going to include them on our postcards to Karori. We will describe ourselves using metaphorical descriptions.

To help us think creatively we started with what we could see and hear around us. Here we are walking around the school listening to sounds around us. We also listed colours, feelings, types of movement.

Chapter Chat - tweeting experts!

Here we are tweeting in pairs this time. One person is the scribe and they are on the keyboard. The other person is discussing with the scribe how to tweet and what to tweet. 

The questions start at 10am Friday and keep feeding into Chapter Chat NZ 3/4. We have 9 questions to answer but there is so much information feeding in we also end up tweeting feedback to other classes and their work! If you want to follow us go to:

Mrs T asks us to show her the tweet before we tweet them. They are supposed to be in full sentences, correct punctuation and have our first names only.

It is so busy - we don't want to go to morning tea! 

THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO ENGAGE WITH OTHER CLASSES AND LEARN ABOUT OTHER NEW ZEALAND SCHOOLS. We look forward to reading the next set of chapters before next Friday so that we are ready to tweet again about THE TERRIBLE TWO.

Here are some of our character studies about the main character Miles - he's not too happy about moving to a new school and making new friends.

We are becoming fish - swimming in our school pool!

Here we are swimming in the pool! The wonderful PTA are fundraising for a heat pump so that next year we will be able to swim in the pool for a longer period of time.

And here are our very own fish - a sucker fish to clean the tank, 1 neon, 2 mollies and a large rainbow shark (who is nocturnal)! We are learning to respect animals including our fish. We have 3 children who are the Marine Biologists at the moment who are in charge of feeding the fish, making sure the tank is clean and making sure people in our class treat the fish with respect. We have a Fish Tank Treaty for this reason.

This is the Rainbow shark fish - it is a large fish and super sensitive. It is 3 years old. Mrs T was clearing the tank before she brought it to school and put it in a bucket for the time. It does not like coming out of the helmet very often. It is super shy. It is very special to the Trembath Family.

How do you feel when you make a mistake? What is your reaction? Fixed Mindset or Growth Mindset?

The class listened to the story called The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes.

 Beatrice never made mistakes. One day she began to make little mistakes - then big mistakes. She was taken by surprise and didn't know what to make of it. How do you think she felt? Have you ever felt that way?

 Beatrice was doing her famous juggling act when it all went wrong. The salt wasn't salt - it was pepper! The pepper made her hamster sneeze! Look what happened in the picture below:

The class talked about what does a mistake look like to them. Everyone had different mistakes. Each person had different ways of dealing with their reaction to making a mistake: some people shrug and say oh well maybe next time I'll get it, OR, oh no I'm really sad and angry, OR, I don't want to do that again, OR, I wonder if I could ask for help next time?

After the story we talked about our Class Dojo plan. This is where we set goals for our school day. The children each have a Dojo to represent them in the Class Dojo website. There are points to earn for the different goals. The children who have earned the highest points by the end of the week are able to choose a prize from the treasure box! The goals are those that relate to Our Korowai and Sunnyhills Values. For example: using Sunnyhills manners

 Next to celebrate our learning so far we made our own Dojos from paper bags and created our own characters. Throughout this year we will continue to use Class Dojo to talk about our learning goals and how we can develop a Growth Mindset. Mrs T will be sending home a newsletter tomorrow to invite parents to download the ClassDojo app and then they can see their child's Class Dojo progress.
